Simon Kernick – Severed

Ex- Army Dan Tyler awakes to find himself lying in bed with his dead girlfriend – who’s head just happens to be missing. His day goes from bad to worse as he watches a DVD that shows him doing the killing. He needs to find out what is going on. But not everything is as it seems.
A good book. Not brilliant, but certainly readable and action-packed.

Michael Robotham – Bombproof

Poor Sami Macbeth was released from prison fifty four hours ago. Now he is the most wanted man in Britain. Apparently, he is a bomber and a murderer – but all he is doing is trying to find his sister!
This is a gritty, fast paced novel. Very readable.

Alex Garland – The Beach

This has got to be one one the worst books I have ever ploughed my way through.
Richard is dope-smoking back-packer who is given the map to a “promised land” in the form of a secluded beach in Thailand. When Richard finds his utopia, his dreams are fulfilled. Or are they?
I reckon the author was dope-smoking when he wrote this. MY opinion only.

Michael Marshall – The Straw Men

I didn’t realise that I had previously read this. The Straw Men is the prequel to The Lonely Dead which I have reviewed.
Ward Hopkins has a secret past – he just doesn’t know it. John Zandt is a former LA detective whose own daughter went missing and was never found. Sarah Becker is 14 years old and is snatched from a busy shopping mall.
The Straw Men are involved – but who are they.
A good book.

Lee Child – The Affair

In this novel we find out why our lovable hero Jack Reacher is no longer a military cop. Lee Child takes us back to Jacks army days.
A woman has her throat cut in a sleepy town in Mississippi that only livens up when the soldiers from the local army base are in town. The county Sheriff is a former US marine and should be able to handle the case but Jack is sent in undercover anyway.
A good novel and even though I couldn’t put it down, it didn’t quite hit the mark.

Stephen King – 11.22.63

Nearly 750 pages of brilliant reading. Well worth picking it up – because you can’t put it down!
Jake Epping is an English teacher who voluntarily goes back in time to try to change history, by stopping the shooting of JFK by Lee Harvey Oswald. Does it change history? You bet it does!
This epic novel is about far more than that though. Read it – it really is a blockbuster.

James Patterson – Kill me if you can

Another rollercoaster, blockbusting novel from Patterson. A stand-alone novel.
Great reading from the first to the last page.
Matthew Bannon is a poor art student and struggling to make ends meet. But plans for a worry-free life with his girlfriend look hell of a lot better when he finds a medical bag stuffed to the brim with diamonds. Unfortunately, the owner wants them back and sends an assassin after Matthew.
With a great twist in the middle, this read goes helter-skelter from start to finish.
I’m begining to run out of different praises for James Patterson – no wonder he is the world’s best selling thriller writer. I’ve been reading his books from the first one (Along came a Spider) – I sang his praises then. He just can’t write them quick enough for me.

Lee Child – Echo Burning

I have read this before when it was first released. Glad I picked it up again.
Another great Jack Reacher novel.

Reacher is in Texas and is looking for a lift. Young, rich and beautiful, Carmen offers him a lift. Her husband is in jail and her in-laws hate her. Is she a lady in distress or a scheming woman out for revenge? How will Reacher get on? Read the book and find out – it’s a great thriller and a real page-turner.

James Patterson – Kill Alex Cross

Frantic from start to finish. Another blockbuster from Mr Patterson.
The presidents children have been kidnapped and a deadly contagion is released into the DC water supply. Are they both terrorist based attacks on the United States?
Can Alex Cross solve the crimes and find the children alive?
Maybe. Is Alex killed? Maybe.
Another gripping Alex Cross novel.

Clive Cussler – Spartan Gold

Another Fargo novel. Sam and Remi the treasure hunters are on a wild goose chase in Maryland. Instead of lost gold they find a German U-boat.
Whilst I plodded on with this, the fact is that it was exactly the same as the other Fargo novel – just slightly different circumstances. Treasure hunters looking for one thing, find another, run into bad guys, solve the puzzle, beat the bad guys and go home.
That’s it. Wasn’t impressed.
